It’s March 8th which means that it is International Women’s Day (IWD)! IWD is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of all women. It is a day all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy, and action. This year’s theme is ‘Be Bold For Change’, which focuses on forging a better working world for all genders. The on-demand economy is one of the methods of employment that is changing the world.

How is the on-demand economy changing the world?

For one, the on-demand economy is growing rapidly and giving people new ways to earn an income. According to Burson-Marsteller’s on-demand economy survey, 22% of adult Americans have worked in the on-demand economy. 51% of those people said that their financial situation has improved in the past year. Additionally, an Intuit survey predicted that the on-demand economy will include 50% of the US working population by 2020. This way of working is growing and becoming more accessible around the country. The people most likely to join the on-demand economy? Women! According to a recent report put out by Harvard University, the most explosive growth taking place comes from women with a bachelor’s degree. Women are changing this workforce and helping to shape how it functions.

When it comes to working, women used to only have two options; lean-in, which means being assertive in your career, or leave the workforce to take care of their family. The on-demand economy provides a third option that gives women the flexibility to “have it all.” Working in the on-demand economy gives women the chance to be their own boss, work on projects that inspire them, and perfect their work-life balance. The rise of the on-demand economy also means that more working moms and caregivers can have the opportunity to work part time. According to a study conducted by the Journal of Family Psychology, part-time work is shown to make moms happier and more engaged both at work and at home. Ultimately, the on-demand economy gives women more options and opportunities to be bold in the workforce.
